And The Spurs Go Limping On

Image
Without a league victory in three games, Tottenham arrived at Molyneux desperate for 3 points.  Or they should have been desperate for 3 points.  Instead, thanks to the insipid tactics of Jose Mourinho, Tottenham ambled to a dull 1-1 draw by playing unattractive, anodyne football.  Mourinho is not an inspiring figure. His insistence on either (a) claiming the better team failed to win (patently false) or (b) blaming the players for their putrid performances is wearing thin.  As a fan of one of English football's top clubs my expectations are that my team will play with attacking intent. I don't expect Spurs to play flamboyant football every week but I expect attacking intent. If there is little attacking intent I expect the manager to intervene.   Mourinho is facing a pivotal 4 week period.  Anything other than victory over Brentford in the League Cup semi final along with 3 to 4 premier league wins and the pressure will intensify in the extreme for the 'special

Tottenham won the first leg at Highbury 0-1. The prolific Clive Allen with the goal.  Allen struck again in three second leg to give Spurs a 2-0 aggregate advantage. But Arsenal struck back with two second half goals to win the match 1-2 and so the tie headed for a replay (no away goals rule). The two teams had a centre circle toss for the replay and Spurs called correctly. So three days later both teams returned to White Hart Lane. Clive Allen struck again to give Spurs a 1-0. For 81 minutes Tottenham held onto the lead only for Arsenal to strike twice in the closing stages to win the tie and ultimately beat Liverpool in the final to claim George Graham's first trophy as Arsenal manager (ironically a trophy he would win for Spurs 12 years later).
